Breast implants are typically made from one of two materials: silicone gel or saline solution. During breast augmentation mammoplasty, Dr Rastogi will generally use a gel implant, however, in your consultation, he will go through the options of both materials with you. Here’s an overview of these two types of breast implants:
1. Silicone Gel Implants:
– Silicone Shell: The outer shell of silicone gel implants is made of a silicone elastomer, a type of rubbery material.
– Silicone Gel Filling: The interior of the implant is filled with a cohesive silicone gel. This gel is designed to mimic the feel of breast tissue.
– Varieties: Silicone gel implants come in various shapes (round or teardrop) and surface textures (smooth or textured). They also have different levels of cohesiveness, which affects how the gel holds together.
2. Saline Implants:
– Saline Solution: Saline implants consist of a silicone shell, like silicone gel implants, filled with sterile saline (saltwater) solution.
– Adjustability: One advantage of saline implants is that their volume can be adjusted during surgery to help achieve the desired size. This is done by filling the implant with saline after it’s placed in the breast.
